When it comes to replacing missing teeth, dentures may be the first thing you think of. They helped millions of people regain their smile and confidence. While they are a great option, you likely have experienced denture sores before. They can happen when you are new to the prosthetic or when you switch over to a new set. Despite being frustrating to deal with, here is what you can do about them.
How Come I’m Getting Denture Sores?
As was briefly mentioned above, this condition can happen to anyone who wears dentures. They can occur because of how they rub up against your gums. Over time, the soft tissues can become irritated and cause spots that are especially uncomfortable.
While an improper fit is the most common reason, food can be another culprit. Bits and pieces can get stuck underneath the prosthetic. If you don’t clean them and brush them at least once a day (preferably twice!), then bacteria can accumulate and cause problems for your gums.
What Can I Do About My Denture Sores?
Despite being an annoyance, there are some solutions you can try to get rid of your sores. Firstly, if your dentures aren’t fitting right, then having them relined by your dentist can make them snug once again. As well, following a proper oral hygiene routine can help get rid of stuck food and bacteria! These can take care of the problem, but you can try these to help you find relief for any discomfort you feel:
- Rinse your mouth with warm salt water. It helps wash away any harmful germs and reduces inflammation.
- Take some pain relievers, and be sure to follow the directions on the label.
- Soak your dentures at night in a prosthetic-safe cleaning solution.
When Should I Visit My Dentist About My Denture Sores?
The good news is that sores are generally not a big deal. They are likely to go away on their own, but you should call the dentist if you have any concerns. If you notice that they are discolored or bigger than usual, then visiting your provider can ensure nothing is awry. Also, if they show signs of infection or last for two weeks or longer, then a checkup may be best.
Modern dentures are the most comfortable they have ever been, and they should stay that way! Remember these tips to help you with any sores and get back to enjoying your full smile with pride.
